Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980s

Taikang Art Museum has invited artist, curator, and art historian Zheng Shengtian to host the seminar “Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980s.” Drawing from his firsthand experience, Zheng Shengtian will look back on the institution’s pivotal role and extraordinary contributions during a transformative period in Chinese contemporary art.

As a cradle for China’s New Wave artists in the 1980s, the Academy nurtured many pioneering figures under Zheng Shengtian’s guidance as an educator and head of the Oil Painting Department. Artists such as Chen Ren, Geng Jianyi, Wang Guangyi, Xu Jin, and Zhang Peili—all featured in the “Unfinished Time” exhibition—graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts during his tenure as chair of oil painting department.
