The Polyphonic Realities: Yang Qiuren’s “Under the Veranda” (1948) and Postwar Painting

Under the Verandah is the only surviving oil painting by Yang Qiuren, a member of the Storm Society, created during the Republican period. This painting not only reflects the wartime foreign painting movement’s turn towards social concern but also hints at the depth of post-war artistic exploration and the agency of creative subjects. As Yang Qiuren commented that same year on the works of Luo Fei—“natural yet realistic”—this appraisal reflects the widespread introspection and new developments within the art world amidst the changing times.
