Indebted to Intimates: The World of Qi Baishi’s Friends

“Indebted to Intimates” was a seal often used by Qi Baishi in his later years. The phrase comes from Epitaph For Zhang Ziye, Ouyang Xiu’s epitaph for his friend Zhang Xian, where he speaks of “the old affection of a lifetime, the kindness of friends.” Qi Baishi carved the seal in 1933, after his “late-age metamorphosis” had secured his reputation in Beijing. That the newly famous artist still remembered teachers and old companions testifies to a rare gratitude that was itself one secret of his success.

Anecdotes of Qi Baishi’s exchanges with mentors and friends warm the historical record; behind his talent and relentless labour lay the simplicity and sincerity with which he returned every kindness. Such relationships not only catalyzed artistic breakthroughs but also opened further life chances; the support of teachers, confidants and allies forged the greatness of Qi Baishi.

Following the connoisseur Xue Liang, this lecture will read affection-laden paintings and intimate letters to reconstruct the artist’s social world of friendship and mentorship.
