Zhang Guangyu and the Childhood Hero: The Birth of Sun Wukong(Monkey King)

In 1945, artist Zhang Guangyu created the comic Journey to the West, presenting an innovative reinterpretation of the classic novel. He portrayed the Monkey King not merely as a mischievous figure, but as a heroic character who dared to challenge injustice.

This lecture will be presented by Li Huizi, Associate Professor and Vice Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. She will guide us on an immersive journey into Zhang Guangyu’s artistic world. Participants will not only discover the creative secrets behind Journey to the West and the classic animation Havoc in Heaven, but also revisit the collective memories evoked by the Monkey King.
