Tang Daxi
Apple of the People
1973
Ink and Color on Paper
In the late 1970s, painters gradually returned from villages where they did farm work to city and concentrated on their creation. Their high mood and relatively relaxed creative environment impelled the emerging of a large number of excellent historical works reflecting military and civilian life in this period. Under the circumstances of the times, Chairman Mao called for the study of the three rules of discipline and eight points for attention, demanded stability and unity, and told the story of “Apples from Jinzhou”. Tang Daxi was deeply moved. Taking this as the theme, he devoted himself to his creation with the most sincere feelings and all his efforts, and reproduced visually the fine tradition of deep friendship between the military and the people. The painting is based on a story telling the relationship between the military and people during the period when the Northeast Field Army was fighting in Jinzhou in 1948. October is the time when apples mature in Jinzhou. Before the war, Luo Ronghuan and other leaders asked each column to do political work well in wartime, especially to strictly abide by the discipline concerning the people: do not touch any property of the people, and “do not eat an apple of the people”. The picture depicts the scene when the field troops passed through the apple orchard. A woman with a kid in her arms in front of a soldier was about to hand an apple in the basket to the soldier. The soldier was moved, stretched out his hand and touched the girl’s forehead, and declined politely. Behind him, there were large troops striding forward. The faces of the soldiers were filled with joy, and they were having a cordial conversation with the welcoming villagers. (Edited by Li Hanning & Yang Zhige, 2021)
