Rocketship to Virtual Venus

1991

Video installation

482 × 256 × 81 cm

From performance and sound art to Fluxus, and from mechanical to video and television installations, the Korean-born artist Nam June Paik devoted his career to creating radical and challenging works that pushed the limits of media. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, drawing on his rich experience, Paik began to produce works with a grander spatial presence, among which Rocketship to Virtual Venus is a representative example.

This monumental rocket-shaped installation, assembled from thirty-six 13-inch televisions, continuously displays a montage of images including Buddha statues, musical scores, and science fiction elements, all drawn from Paik’s earlier creations. The work explores the history, dissemination, and transformation of electronic imagery, while also revealing his personal reflections on themes such as the future, the universe, and space exploration.
